29/05/2013
The work “Climate Chance! Was presented on May 21st at FNAC do Chiado. A legal-economic reflection of the carbon market in the fight against climate change ”, by lawyers Ivone Rocha and João Quintela Cavaleiro and engineer Paulo Caetano.
The concern for the phenomenon of climate change set the tone for this work. Among the environmental control strategies available to states and companies, the carbon market has taken on an important role.
It is an Environmental Law work that starts from an economic and management analysis and describes the functioning of the market in the international, European and Portuguese regulatory context. With an analysis of the Kyoto Protocol and the European Emissions Trading System, the risks and difficulties in the formulation of carbon purchase and sale agreements are exemplified.
It seeks to foresee the economic and financial value of what is considered to be “the biggest market failure ever seen in the world”.
The ultimate goal is to democratize the debate. Reconciling environment and business, formerly opposite realities, assuming that the carbon market alongside other control strategies can be a source of opportunities for innovation and competitive advantage. It is a problem for States, but in which companies and individuals can win towards truly sustainable growth.
